I’ve been SWIPED!
By Erin | April 1, 2009
Who knew I was such a good copywriter?!
Get a load of this. I hesitate to relate this anecdote today, lest folks think it's just an April Fool's joke. It isn't. And, I'm not laughing.
But, hey, maybe I've got a new calling as a copywriter? On that, I kid. I don't think I'm all that good, but apparently, I've admirers. Here's why I say that.
Yesterday, I sent an email to my list with the subject "What College REALLY Teaches You?" and the punchline "Socializing!" Well, I guess it was good stuff because I learned someone else swiped the entire thing verbatim (even my p.s. about being
nostalgic for the college days)! All of which was true FOR ME. Who knows if it rang true for my fellow marketer, but the point is, no permission was granted to use it.
On the bright side, as Charles Caleb Colton is oft quoted, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." The joke may be on the copycat though. I was ostensibly promoting the Social Network Empire product, but I'm pretty sure I didn't make any sales.
Now, if I hear s/he did — off my email ... Grrrr. (I think I deserve a cut. LOL.)
The second case is pretty cool though:
I came in among the runners up in a recent headline contest for Stephanie Mulac's "Fire Your Family" report.
So, if you see emails with the subject, "90% of Your Family is Sorely Lacking...," that's mine! And they DO have permission to use it. :)
