oscommerce, zencart, magento, prestashop

By Erin | September 26, 2008

Got a favorite Open Source e-commerce solution? I’m looking for first-hand experiences — good and bad. Are there any that folks should definitely avoid?

Magento looks really nice, very feature rich, but despite being on the docket, they still don’t have a built-in means of offering an affiliate program. Some of the others at least provide plug-in capabilities for this.

Several use CSS, but the older ones, like osCommerce, still use tables. What else should we consider? Which has the most potential, etc.?

I’m sure many would like to happen upon and engage in this kind of discussion when comparison “shopping” for their first store. So, please comment with your thoughts, opinions, and experiences.

No opinions on the matter, folks? In case anyone’s interested, I’m favoring Prestashop.

I have used all of these. The thing to consider is.. what features are important and who will be using it in the end.
I think Zen Cart is great but has its flaws and its Admin is difficult for users.
Prestashop still lacks some much needed features/add-ons and doesn’t have a very big/active user community. PrestaShop looks AWESOME though.
Magento is one I have looked at lately though. Although I am comfortable using ZenCart (as a developer), it’s still important to keep the end user in mind.. they need the comfort of a “pretty” and usable admin like Magento or PrestaShop.
If Presta and Magento add a couple more features they will be unstoppable!

Thanks, Buck. Magento needs to lessen its demand on resources though (at least that’s the word on the street). And, I agree about the features; affiliate programs are a must.

That’s true about Magento. It is pretty slow now that I have had a chance to push a site live with it. Prestashop just released v 1.1! Its in beta but has some much needed features added. I just installed the new version today so I haven’t looked at all of it.. but it’s a pretty amazing program.
